Missouri’s “Romeo and Juliet” Law Explained

In Missouri, the age of consent is 17. This means anyone under 17 legally cannot agree to sexual activity, and their partner could face statutory rape charges, even if both people agreed to the relationship. To address this, Missouri has a “Romeo and Juliet” law, which protects teens close in age from severe legal consequences in consensual relationships.

The law allows a defense if the age gap between the partners is less than four years, and the person is between 14 and 17. This is meant to avoid punishing normal teen relationships. However, it does not protect anyone over 21 involved with a minor, even if the age gap is within the allowed range. It also does protect individuals, if the relationship crosses into coercion or involves someone below the age of 14.

For teens and their families, understanding consent laws and the Romeo and Juliet provisions is crucial. The legal implications can be severe and can result in felony charges.
