Do Parents Have to Pay for Their Child’s College in Missouri?

Many parents wonder if they are legally required to help pay for their child’s college after a divorce. In Missouri, child support can continue after high school, but parents are not automatically required to cover college tuition or other expenses. However, there are some important rules to understand.

How Missouri Handles Child Support for College Students

Missouri law allows child support to continue past age 18 if the child is enrolled in college or a vocational program full-time and follows certain requirements. To keep receiving support, the child must:

Take at least 12 credit hours per semester, unless there’s a valid reason, like a medical condition.
Keep up their grades and make progress toward graduation.
Send proof of enrollment and transcripts to both parents each semester.

Even though child support can continue while a child is in college, Missouri law does not require parents to pay for tuition, housing, books, or other college costs, unless they previously agreed to do so in their divorce or parenting plan. If a court order includes college expenses, parents must follow those terms.

Changing or Extending Child Support for College

If a child does not meet the requirements, a parent can ask the court to stop support payments. On the other hand, if both parents agree to help with college costs, they can make it official through a court-approved agreement.
